NL Architects’ ArtA - The Netherlands

Dutch firm NL Architects took a step up (pun intended) in "ArtA", their latest competition entry for a new multi-functional arts building for Arnhem in The Netherlands.
The firm is shortlisted along with other notable firms that include Kengo Kuma, Studio HH + SO-IL and BIG, and OMA.

"ArtA will be an exciting mixture of public functions: a ‘sandwich’ of cinema, square,  museum and park: Art House, Art Square, Art Show, Art Park. By pushing this programmatic sandwich down on one side the roof becomes accessible. At the same time the building opens up to the river. An easily accessible roof landscape emerges draped over vibrant city life: ‘urban moraine’. (...)

As convenções parecem-nos repressivas, "as questões impessoais só despertam o nosso interesse quando as encaramos - erradamente - sob um ponto de vista personalizado"; tudo deve ser psicologizado, dito na primeira pessoa: o indivíduo deve implicar-se a si próprio, revelar as suas emoções, exprimir o seu sentimento íntimo, à falta do que incorrerá no vício imperdoável da frieza e do anonimato. Numa sociedade "intimista", que tudo mede pela bitola da psicologia, a autenticidade e a sinceridade tornam-se, como já Riesman notava, virtudes cardiais, e os indivíduos, absorvidos pelo seu eu íntimo, vêem-se cada vez mais incapazes de "desempenhar" papéis sociais: tornámo-nos "actores privados de arte". Com a sua obsessão de verdade psicológica, o narcisismo enfraquece a capacidade de lidar com a vida social, torna-se impossível toda a distância entre o que se sente e o que se exprime: "A capacidade de ser expressivo perde-se, porque o indivíduo tenta identificar a sua aparência com o seu ser profundo e porque liga o problema da expressão efectiva ao da autenticidade desta". E é aqui que reside a armadilha; porque quanto mais os indivíduos se libertam de códigos e costumes em busca de uma verdade pessoal, mais as suas relações se tornam "fratricidas" e associais. Com a exigência crescente de mais imediato e de maior proximidade, assaltando-se o outro à força de confidências especiais, já não se observa a distância necessária ao respeito da vida privada dos outros: o intimismo é tirânico e "incivil". A civilidade é a actividade que protege o eu dos outros, e lhe permite portanto fruir da companhia de outrém. O uso da máscara é a própria essência da civilidade.(...)

Volvo - Concept XC Coupe

One Step Ahead, é a frase, dito ou máxima, que deveria definir a Volvo Cars... tal é o seu pioneirismo na forma de desenhar os carros.  Extrema acuidade, quer no interior, quer no exterior, linhas suaves e minimalistas, atendendo apenas ao essencial num carro. Funcionará perfeitamente, como decorador de jardins de uma qualquer casa de linhas modernas. Performances ainda não descritas, dado que o carro ainda é um concept.

The two-door, four-seater Volvo Concept XC Coupe has a strong connection with its sibling Volvo Concept Coupe. However, the larger 21-inch wheels, the accentuated wheel-arches and the taller roofline contribute to a more robust impression and a fuller, capable look.

“We wanted to create a tool that safely enables you to go wherever you want to go – to the countryside, the ski slopes or the beach – and makes sure you always arrive in style,” says Thomas Ingenlath.

Lotus Motorcycle C-01 Superbike

Lotus has just unveiled its first motorcycle, the C-01 and whilst the name may not inspire your imagination the bike itself almost certainly will.

The bike's appearance is courtesy of designer Daniel Simon whose previous work includes Tron: Legacy's Lightcycle and the Bubble Ship in Oblivion. If you're wondering where that retro influence is from he also designed a bunch of vehicles in the Captain America film as well.

The C-01 isn't just about good looks either, it's a state-of-the-art superbike with a body built from titanium, carbon fibre and naturally aerospace quality steel.

Behind that unique air intake is a V-twin engine boasting 200hp. There's no word on performance but considering its low-profile design and Lotus' history you can bet it'll be blisteringly fast.
